    Wallace River Ranch
    Ciara [Phoenix Domes]

Three Domes, 36 Acres, and a Vision Built from the Ground Up

BACKGROUND: Built Because It Didn’t Exist Yet

Marianne Vogel had been looking for it for years while travelling, a cozy countryside accommodation with animals, nature, and genuine peace. She could never quite find it. So she and her family decided to create it themselves.

Wallace River Ranch sits on 36 acres in Wallace, Nova Scotia, on Canada’s Atlantic coast. The property started with domes from another supplier, but over time, the quality and guest experience of those original structures fell short of the standard Marianne was building toward. Two of the original domes have since been fully replaced with Phoenix Domes 8m Hybrid Domes, finished in sage green. The third, a white dome from the original supplier, remains on the property and is visually distinct: its different window shape makes the comparison between the two brands immediately apparent to anyone who visits.

Today the property runs all three domes as nightly rentals alongside a petting farm, private hot tubs, and quiet outdoor spaces designed for people who need to slow down. It is a small, family-driven business built step by step with a clear sense of purpose.

"We started Wallace River Ranch because it was something I was always personally looking for when travelling, a cozy accommodation in the countryside with animals, nature, and a peaceful atmosphere. So we decided to create it ourselves."
    — Marianne Vogel, Wallace River Ranch

    THE PROPERTY & THE DOMES
Three Domes, One Ranch, Endless Details

    Design choices that matter

Wallace River Ranch’s domes reflect careful thought about both guest experience and long-term operations. Key design decisions include:

    • Fully enclosed bathrooms on every dome — walls on all sides for moisture management, cleaning hygiene, and guest privacy, especially for families and multi-night stays

    • A mezzanine above the bathroom and kitchen in each dome, maximizing the vertical space unique to geodesic geometry

    • Platforms built on screw piles, allowing easy access underneath for plumbing, maintenance, and future upgrades without disrupting the structure

    • Full kitchens in every dome, making the accommodations feel like a complete experience rather than a tent with amenities

From competitor domes to Phoenix Domes: a full replacement

The two competitor domes that originally anchored Wallace River Ranch’s accommodation offering have been fully replaced replaced entirely with Phoenix Domes 8m Deluxe Glamping Package Domes finished in sage green. The difference is visible the moment you step onto the property. The window shape alone tells the story: the Phoenix Domes feature the signature panorama window with hybrid glass, while the original white dome’s different window design makes the contrast between the two unmistakable.

Choosing sage green for the new builds was a deliberate decision, a fresh aesthetic identity for the structures that now define the Wallace River Ranch experience, and a clear visual signal that these are a new generation of dome on the property.

Marianne decided to add the Glass Panorama windows with the new Phoenix Domes builds for a much improved experience.

More natural light, a stronger connection to the surrounding landscape, and a guest experience that feels distinctly more immersive were part of the package from day one.

"Especially now with the glass windows, it feels like you are outside, but you’re not. So much natural light."
    — Marianne Vogel

    GUEST EXPERIENCE
What Guests Find When They Arrive

Guests at Wallace River Ranch consistently arrive expecting something smaller and leave surprised by how spacious, well-equipped, and genuinely comfortable the domes are. Full kitchens, enclosed bathrooms, private hot tubs, ranch animals, countryside views, and sunsets over open fields — it is a combination that is hard to replicate in a traditional hotel or cabin setting.

"Guests can sit in the hot tub, watch the sunset, listen to the rain on the dome, or wake up to views of the fields and animals. It creates a peaceful atmosphere that many people are looking for today."
    — Marianne Vogel

Families are particularly drawn to the experience. The opportunity for children to interact with farm animals and spend time in nature resonates deeply with urban visitors looking for a genuine break from everyday life. The domes have also proven effective at extending tourism into shoulder seasons — a meaningful advantage in Atlantic Canada’s variable climate.

    BUSINESS & ROI
    A Worthwhile Investment, Steadily Growing

While Marianne prefers to keep exact financial figures private, the business picture at Wallace River Ranch is positive and continuing to grow. The domes have generated strong interest from guests seeking private, nature-connected experiences distinct from traditional hotels. Year-round bookings, social media exposure, repeat guests, and farm-connected experiences have all contributed to steady business growth.

The domes have enabled Wallace River Ranch to stand out in Nova Scotia’s tourism market in a way that a conventional accommodation simply could not. For Marianne, the investment has made sense — and continues to.

"The domes have created opportunities for year-round bookings, social media exposure, repeat guests, and additional experiences connected to the ranch and animals."
    — Marianne Vogel

    ADVICE FOR FUTURE DOME OWNERS
    What Marianne Would Tell You

Do your homework before you buy:

Every municipality has different rules around zoning, septic, electrical, permitting, and building requirements. Getting the proper paperwork and permits in place before purchasing the dome saves significant time, money, and stress. Do not assume, verify first.

Stay in a dome before you build one:

Talk to an owner. Visit a property. It is not an easy build, and there is more to consider — layout, platform, climate, utilities — than most people initially expect. The experience of being inside one helps make those decisions real.

Match your dome to your climate:

This matters more than almost anything else. In Atlantic Canada, that means heavier struts, proper insulation planning, and accounting for hurricane-season wind loads. Do not underspec for your region.

For the right person, it is deeply rewarding:

Running dome accommodations involves genuine work: maintenance, guest communication, operations, weather contingencies, and ongoing problem-solving. But for someone who loves hospitality and is prepared for the lifestyle, it can be extraordinarily fulfilling — personally and professionally.

"For the right person or business, domes can be incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally."
    — Marianne Vogel
